from the hot springs night
coffee roasting grind up day

you there, desert girl,
you there, mountain man,
ten thousand years
and these rocks aren't tired yet

The Sugar Trail Motel Blues

I'm no horseback man. I'm a truck guy. Whack attack, spleen, poolside dream. That's my thinking. I don't sleep much anymore. I wait. I go on. I look across the street. Roasting marshmallows was a long ago thing. When the tourists...well, that was then. Steam comes out of the ground near Broken Tree. Some of us go there and dip into the hot waters.

beneath the sun
in the stone dead
of a sunburnt sleep
the cowboy rides a horse

this is not a movie.

he has a dream of some sweet woman-
she smells like peaches and
her thighs are creamy and white

have you ever seen someone ride a horse
totally unconscious?

It has happened more often than you think.

this is not a movie.

Roasting in the sun
Steam rises from his form-
Whiskey like a halo from his mouth

An invisible leash of consequence
Pulls him along.
Like every other man, he
Wants to be heroic. Remembered.
Loved in the perfect way.

The earth revolves
Beneath the horse’s hooves
And the sleeping cowboy
(the potential hero of
This brief narrative)
Is no more than a speck of dust
In the wide, black universe.

He awakes as the stars come out,
His horse standing still below him
Drinking from a cold stream
Snorting into the dark.

this is not a movie.

It is amazing to awaken
on a horse at night
Beneath an endless cold sky
After long hot days of dreaming.

WOMAN AT THE OCEAN #2

top pulled down
steam heart
rising waves
crashing waves
behind her

roasting wet
heat dream
sun clouds
black swim suit
top pulled down

skin light
tight fire
sweet breasts
joy now
moon sleep

a rider on horseback
rides on beyond
a woman at the ocean

MEMORY FRAGMENTS

horseback…
bareback riding…
on a mountain…
above the clouds…
going into them, going through them, going home…

no sleep-dream this
simple, once upon a time, reality…

she was old when I bought her (babysitting money)…
but she had been a polo pony in younger days…
thoroughbred…stood sixteen hands with a gentle soul…
rode well with a snaffle bit in her mouth…nothing more needed…
leaned close to her neck when she ran and I knew…together
we were part of the wind…and we loved each other…

teen age time, 1950’s…

she froze when you fell…so you could roll under her for protection…
polo thing…

they said what I would/could be when I grew up (there were choices)…

but then there was that time, bareback, on a mountain, above clouds…
three…almost four years we had…
before they decided it was enough…they always decided…
(but that is another story)…

should have never gone home…
should have never gone home
to kitchen steam and
roasting coffee.
